Females Of Fitness – Sheena Jibson

Introducing Sheena Jibson – trail runner, outdoor lover, photographer, mom of two, wife, nursing student, Lyme fighter. Before I got sick {with Lyme disease }, I ran often. I’d done a few relay races and half marathons, but I never really ran with a purpose. I thought I was eating healthy because I ate “low fat” food. As a family we ate more processed food than we should, and I never thought of food as “fuel” that my body needs. On my journey to get healthy, I had a doctor who encouraged me to cut out everything processed. He explained that my body was fighting off this disease and by loading it with processed food and fake stuff and not fueling it with whole and REAL foods, I was just making that battle harder. It made me think more about what was going into my body, and my family’s bodies as well. We slowly weeded out the processed stuff (it took years, it wasn’t overnight!), and sought out whole foods–grass fed meats, fruits, veggies, whole grains. Nothing fancy, just real food...

Females Of Fitness – Kalli Verbecky

Meet Kalli Keisel Verbecky. 34, married, mother to three boys ages 7, 5, and 2. Marketing copy-writer and content creator, current PTA Secretary, newbie Olympic Weightlifter. I’ve always been athletic and a regular gym goer. I found Olympic Weightlifting just a few months ago. Before then, I was always the only woman on the squat rack at my regular gym who wasn’t afraid of the heavy plates, but I had zero training experience and no one to tell me how I could improve. I set a goal to compete in a weightlifting meet at some point in the next year, left my old gym, found my new gym and got myself a coach. Best decision ever! Trying something new is scary and uncomfortable, that doesn’t change even when you’re 34 and feel pretty solid in your status as an adult. I’m sore every single day in one way or another. My hands are torn up, I’ve got bruises everywhere, learning new technique can make you feel like a bumbling dork at times. It’s all super humbling to be taking up a new fitness pa...

Faces of Fit: See How Sarah Hall Oddson Lost 36 Lbs

Q: When did your journey start? I’ve had my ups and downs over the years but I got serious about making a change about three years ago. I’d say in the past year, however, is when I’ve made the most progress. Q: What made you want to make a change? When I realized I was 178 pounds (which was the same weight as when I was pregnant with twins!), I knew it was time to do something. Q: What tips do you have for others starting out? Be consistent. Falling off the wagon is normal – don’t let it get you thinking that all is lost. Just dust yourself off and laugh and get back up. Also, make clear goals for yourself and celebrate each and every little victory along the way. Keep your “fat pants” as a reminder of how well you’re progressing. Q: What have been some of the biggest obstacles you’ve had to overcome? Probably self-sabotage. I’m still trying to master this one. For me, it’s all about my emotional relationship with food. I’ve been working hard at trying to view it as fuel inst...

Faces of Fit: How Christiana Wojcik Lost 15 Lbs Despite Her Busy Lifestyle

Q: When did your journey start? I was active in sports growing up and then in the first two years of college, I slowly stopped running and quickly started eating all the things, gaining 10-15 pounds (depending on the day). My 3rd year of college, I had a free gym membership through working in the Kid’s Club at Gold’s Gym and decided to kick my butt back into shape. I went to the gym every day for the month off between semesters and lost those 15 pounds. I kept it off without going back to the gym during my “busy schedule,” but mostly because I was a poor college student who only ate two baby meals a day–my nutrition was less than stellar. Toward the end of paramedic school, I started working out again and got a membership with Anytime Fitness; I wanted to be in shape for my job. I kept steady with the gym on and off throughout the last 4 years and my nutrition fluctuated pretty badly, but it wasn’t until summer 2017 that I saw Kaytlin’s Fight the Fat Challenge pop up on my Faceboo...

Females of Fitness – Amanda Colin

Check out Amanda Colin’s amazing story of perseverance, strength, dedication, and victory. She is AMAZING. I’ve been into fitness I (well, I’ve exercised) since I was 15-years old, but my true journey didn’t begin until much later. The thing is, I’ve never really had a significant amount of weight to lose, although, in my previously disordered mindset, I didn’t see it that way… When I was younger, I struggled with self-esteem. I had a really negative self-image, something I partly attribute to being born visually impaired (I was born with congenital cataracts and Microphthalmia, and I later developed Glaucoma). It wasn’t that big of a deal when I was really young, but as a teenager, I felt “different”. I wore thick-lensed glasses and I was unable to drive due to low vision. Looking back now, those things really aren’t that big of a deal, but like all teens, I just wanted to fit into one standard mold. Things kind of spiraled downward, and I developed body dysmenorrhea. I convinced ...

Females Of Fitness – Andie Thueson

Meet Andie: trainer, boxer, wife and mother, spreading the good word of self-love and positivity! Hi, I’m Andie! I’m a NASM certified personal trainer and a macros aficionado. I’ve been married to the love of my life for 15 awesome years and we have 3 beautiful kiddos. I love being a Mom! It’s such a blessing and sometimes a curse if we’re being honest, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. I am the author of Maybe I Will , a health and fitness blog. My sole purpose in its creation was to find a way to share with the world my passion for health and fitness and living a positive life. Over 5 years ago, I woke up and realized I didn’t like the woman staring back at me and knew I had to change. I began working out and eating better and little by little, things started to improve. I didn’t feel better overnight but as my fitness levels improved, my confidence grew and so did my ability to see myself in a more positive light. Over the years I have learned to embrace and love myself “a...

Faces of Fit: Lindsay Dunn’s Life-Changing Fitness Transformation

Q: When did your journey start? My journey started in January of 2016. Q: What made you want to make a change? I was in my early 30s with high blood pressure and a history of high blood pressure in my family.  My doctor was concerned and had me seeing her every 3 months to monitor my blood pressure. She had given me 6 months (from June 2015-Jan. 2016) to bring down my weight and hopefully lower my blood pressure. I failed miserably. I did okay and cut a few pounds from June until September, but after the holidays I was heavier than I was in June.  In Jan. 2016 she said gave me a final 3 months to show improvement or she would have no choice but to put me on medicine. High blood pressure medicine at my age? I believed her this time and I was sick of seeing the number on the scale at every visit (I had no idea how high it had gotten and to this day I’m really not sure what my top weight was).  So after I left the doctor’s office that day I made the decision I was goin...

Best Booty-Building Exercises (That Aren’t Squats)

It seems like everywhere you look for fitness advice, one of the most common recommendations for building well-developed glutes is to “just squat.” While squats are a fantastic functional exercise and should be used for improving balance, mobility and overall lower body development, they are not the best exercise for directly targeting and growing your glute muscles. Your “booty” is comprised of a group of three muscles: the gluteus maximus, gluteus medius and gluteus minimus. In order to build a perky, round and toned tush (without growing your quads or hamstrings too much), you must focus on targeting these three muscles. If you are looking to grow your glutes but refrain from growing your legs, try the following exercises: Barbell Hip Thrusts Hip thrusts are one of the most important exercises for growing your glutes. When done properly, they will improve your glute strength, shape and size. This 2015 study , done by Bret Contreras (also known as “the glute guy”), explains how...

Faces of Fit: Bree Balkanli

Q: When did your journey start? I worked out during my third pregnancy doing circuit training at Planet  Fitness three times a week up until three days before the birth in Aug 2014. I  started walking in Feb 2015 then worked up to running a few months later to  lose the baby weight gained. Fell in love with running and all the benefits,  weight loss, energy, and general happiness. In Oct 2016, we moved from New  Mexico to East Texas where I stopped working out, gained weight, got  depressed and just was overall miserable. I started to run again in Feb 2017,  and had discovered the protein from IdealFit through Amazon and gave it a  try. I loved it and a few months later I started going to the gym and began  lifting weights after a one-time session with a personal trainer. I joined the  IdealFit Women Facebook page and have taken many tips, inspiration, and  advice from many of the trainers and other women in the group, applying...

Faces of Fit: How Jodie Lane Found Fitness & Learned to Love Her Own Body

Q: When did your journey start? I have always struggled with my weight and the constant feeling of never being good enough when it came to my appearance and body. I tried every “quick fix” diet under the sun, always looking for that “miracle” that would take away the pain and negative self-talk I carried with me on a continual basis. As you can imagine, none of those things ever “fixed” me and, more times than not, left me feeling worse than before. Some worked, as far as weight loss went, but none of them ever addressed the negativity I had towards myself and because of that, nothing ever stuck permanently. It would just be a matter of time before I’d find myself on the never-ending hamster wheel of gaining weight back and then beating myself up about it. Q: What made you want to make a change? A couple of years ago, there were a few pictures that had been taken of me that, when I saw them, made me want to just cry. It was at that point that I had finally had enough. I was ready...
