Gina Aliotti’s Summer Squat Challenge

As my Summer Squat Challenge continues to rock, I will be sharing with you several of my favorite squat variations throughout the challenge or in your daily workouts. Since working out only at home and without the use of gym equipment, I have found squats to be an absolute must for keeping the legs toned and tight while booty round and lifted. With good form and mind-muscle connection, it is amazing the results when you incorporate squats into your daily routine. Have fun and let’s get our squat on! THIS WEEK’S SQUAT VARIATION: MONKEY SQUATS Open your legs with a wide stance and your toes turned out. Bring your arms out to your sides then start to lower, bending your knees while keeping your feet flat on the ground. Your arms will hang down between your legs at the bottom of the squat, then rise back up to the tip of the squat and repeat. G-Tip: It is completely normal for your back to round slightly at the bottom of the squat. The key is to keep your feet flat on the ground at ...

What About Canned Fruit?

Food cans used to be soldered with lead compounds—so much so that people living off of canned food may have died from lead poisoning. Thankfully, this is no longer a problem in the United States. Lead contamination was one of the first priorities of the Food and Drug Administration back in 1906, before it was even called the FDA. Newspapers now have online archives going back a century so we can read about landmark historical events like “FDA Proposes Lead-Soldered Cans Be Banned” from way back yonder in…1993. So even though it was a priority in 1906, the ban didn’t actually go into effect until 1995. Evidently it was complicated because lead solder was “grandfathered” in as a “prior-sanctioned” substance. Now that the lead is gone, though, are canned foods healthy? It depends primarily on what’s in the can. If it’s SPAM or another processed meat product, for instance, I’d probably pass. What about canned fruit? We know fruits and vegetables in general may help protect us from...

Chris Downing’s Excellent Vegan Adventure

By Super Trainer Chris Downing I’ve always been a high-protein guy. If you’ve done SHIFT SHOP and followed my Simple Shift Nutrition Guide with its progressive carb reduction, you’ve probably already figured this out. But several months ago, I started wondering if this was the best thing for me. I’m all about challenging myself and trying new things — but here I was, eating the same things over and over. Around the same time, I learned a fun fact that really got me thinking: The two strongest animals in the world — the elephant and the silverback gorilla — don’t eat meat. If they don’t need it, why do I?! And look at antelopes and gazelles. They’ll tear your legs off in a running contest and all they eat is vegetables! It was time for a change. I just had this internal feeling that I wanted to give my body a break from digesting meat. At the same time, I knew I had Plant-Based Vegan Shakeology and Plant-Based Recover to meet my nutrition and post-workout protein needs. Origin...

Why Doctors are So Drug Happy

Who funds most of the studies that show drugs are safe and effective? The drug companies themselves. This is the topic of my video Eliminating Conflicts of Interest in Medical Research . “It is self-evidently absurd to look to investor-owned companies for unbiased evaluations of their own products…One result of the bias in this literature is that physicians learn to practice a very drug-intensive style of medicine. Even when lifestyle changes would be more effective, physicians and their patients often believe that for every ailment there is a drug.” It’s gotten so bad that “[p]hysicians can no longer rely on the medical literature for valid and reliable information.” That’s quite an accusation. Says who? Says a long-time editor of the New England Journal of Medicine , one of the most prestigious medical journals in the world. To help expose some of the conflicts of interest corrupting the medical profession, the Drug Company Gift Disclosure Act was introduced in Congress where it ...

Stair Stepper for Kick Butt Cardio

You know those stair steppers you never use? No, not the StepMill where you’re climbing the never-ending rotating stairs. I am talking about the machine that’s always close to the StepMill but looks teeny tiny by comparison. You know the one! Never thought that step stepper could be the key to a kick butt cardio routine ? Well, I have a program that’ll do just that! First, there are a few things you should know before you get started. Unlike other cardio machines, the resistance will vary dramatically from person to another depending on your weight, so it’s difficult to provide you specific levels that will apply across the board. Also, you control how long the strides are by how fast you step, so play around with your stride, tempo and resistance. The key is to shock the body by doing something it usually never does. With that being said, here we go! #1 – Facing forward, grab the handles and begin pedaling. The first round will be feeling the machine out. Make sure your stride...

Dishonest Doctors

One of the critical questions to ask whenever reading a medical journal article is, “Who funded the study?” In most journals, researchers are required to identify their sources of funding, so what’s the problem? Well, researchers can obscure the true origin of financial support: They can hide it, disguise it, or even launder the money through a front group. A case in point is a study downplaying the risks of lung cancer that was funded in part by the Foundation for Lung Cancer: Early Detection, Prevention, and Treatment. That doesn’t sound so bad until you realize it was underwritten by millions of dollars from a tobacco company. There’s no obligation to “disclose a funding source’s source of funding,” which allows “companies to evade financial disclosure requirements” and makes it harder to “follow the money trail.” As I discuss in my video Disclosing Conflicts of Interest in Medical Research , why does the funding source matter? Every single one of eight reviews covering over a ...

Place the top of your left foot on a bench behind you with your right foot out in front. Drop down into a low lunge while keeping your chest up and shoulders back. Be sure to lower straight down rather than leaning forward. Pause at the bottom of the lunge then use your heel to return to the s...

Are You Getting Enough Protein?

I’m writing about protein because I receive many e-mails asking about my diet; people wonder if I only eat protein, if I eat just fish, how much protein to include in the daily diet, etc. First I want to be very clear about the quantity of protein, because over-eating protein or other macronutrients will result in fat and weight gain. It’s also important to know that the calories are very important when you design a diet. To know the exact grams that a person has to eat is impossible, but some research can help to find a good formula for a balanced diet. So how do you calculate your protein needs? It depends on multiple factors, including height, weight, activity (sedentary, active, elite athlete). Usually the formula is: • Average healthy sedentary adult: 0.5-.7 grams of protein per pound bodyweight • Average healthy active adult: 0.8-1 grams of protein per pound of bodyweight You’ll also find this proportion in some bodybuilding and fitness articles: 0.8-1.5 grams of protein ...

Botched Circumcision Leads to Penis Amputation for Baby Boy

From  cord blood banking  to  baby naming ceremonies , parents of newborns have a bevy of key decisions to make when it comes to medical procedures and religious and/or cultural practices. For instance, as soon as a couple learns they're having a boy, they might find themselves grappling with the  decision to circumcise—or not . It's an individual, personal decision for every family. Thankfully, when parents opt in, most circumcisions go off without a hitch. However, a shocking story out of Egypt highlights one instance in which the routine procedure went terribly awry. A father from Cairo is speaking out after his son's  penis had to be amputated following a botched circumcision . The Jerusalem Post  reported that the father named Ashraf Helmi says he took his child to Cairo to be vaccinated and was convinced by his sister-in-law and a family friend to have his  1-month-old son Mohamed circumcised during the same doctor's visit. According to  Me...

Shapely and Sexy Summer Calves

We rarely look at calves as traditional “problem areas,” but we sure do notice a nice set of calves when we see one. Is it just genetics…or is it something more? Genetics will most definitely play a part in the shape of your calves, but you can absolutely work toward building their size and strength ! The calves are a complex muscle, but you should be mainly concerned with the Gastrocnemius (Gastroc) and the Soleus . The Gastroc gets more stimulation during standing calf exercises where your knees are extended (not bent). The Soleus is the smaller muscle and hides below the Gastroc. It gets more stimulation during bent-leg exercises and responds well to slow-twitch endurance and high reps. As a general rule with all of my training, I always put a priority on any muscle group that is lagging. If your calves are not as developed as they should be, it’s time to dedicate a couple (or more) days per week to them, hitting all the angles and working to failure. I love the way my legs ...

Should We Increase Our Protein Intake After Age 65?

A study that purported to show that diets high in meat, eggs, and dairy could be as harmful to health as smoking supposedly suggested that “[p]eople under 65 who eat a lot of meat, eggs, and dairy are four times as likely to die from cancer or diabetes.” But if you look at the actual study, you’ll see that’s simply not true: Those eating a lot of animal protein didn’t have four times more risk of dying from diabetes—they had 73 times the risk. Even those in the moderate protein group, who got 10 to 19 percent of calories from protein, had about 23 times the risk of dying of diabetes compared to those consuming the recommended amount of protein, which comes out to be about 6 to 10 percent of calories from protein, around 50 grams a day. So, the so-called low protein intake is actually the recommended protein intake, associated with a major reduction in cancer and overall mortality in middle age, under age 65, but not necessarily in older populations. When it comes to diabetes deaths...

Lower down into a basic squat and instead of standing up explosively, jump with both feet, landing squarely on the box in a low squat position. Step or jump off and repeat. Start with a fairly low box— no higher than one foot— and work up to progressively higher boxes as your strength and confidence improves. Be very careful to la...
