Why There Is so Much Commercial Corruption in Nutrition

The prevalence of chronic diseases such as diabetes has skyrocketed, as has the number of articles published about diabetes in medical journals. “Why does our wealth of academic knowledge not translate more directly to improving the human condition?” Perhaps our over-attachment to the reductionistic mindset that proved so successful with acute deficiency diseases may actually represent an obstacle to success battling chronic disease. These days, health seems to have been reduced to a highly commercialized commodity, in which we’re marketed all sorts of high-cost, high-tech tests and treatments of dubious value with substantial risks attached. “This is worrisome because most of the things that make us healthy and keep us healthy are cheap and largely available without professional help or commercial prodding.” This isn’t to say modern medicine can’t work miracles, but what about the big picture? That is, what about the 80 percent of death and disability caused by preventable diet-rel...

Meat Can Cause Stress Hormone Levels to Rise and Testosterone levels to Drop

A critique of the scientific validity of the dietary advice in Men’s Health magazine discovered nuggets claiming meat can give men “a testosterone boost,” but we’ve known for a quarter century that a meal with that much fat can drop testosterone levels by nearly one-third within hours. In fact, a significant drop of both free and bound testosterone in the bloodstream occurs within just one hour of it going in one’s mouth, whereas a low-fat meal of mostly carbs has no such effect. Based on in vitro studies on the effects of fat on testicle cells in a petri dish, researchers suspect fat in the blood may actually suppress testosterone production in real time. If you feed people lots of eggs and meat, including fish and poultry, and then switch them to a diet with bread, fruit, vegetables, and sugar—but about the same amount of fat—all their testosterone levels go up. Even more importantly, however, all their levels of cortisol, a stress hormone produced by our adrenal glands, go down...

Sign Up for My Webinar on Intermittent Fasting

Some of the most common questions I receive are about ketogenic diets and intermittent fasting, so I’ve done a deep dive into the research on both topics and am excited to finally present my findings. You can learn about the latest science on the keto diet in a 7-video series on my new streaming DVD (see below for more information). As for intermittent fasting, I’m excited to announce I’ll be hosting a 3-hour live webinar on July 26 th at 2pm ET. I’ll cover the pros and cons of calorie restriction and water-only fasting for weight loss, alternate-day fasting, body fat, longevity and metabolic health, the 5:2 diet, fasting-mimicking diets, and time-restricted feeding – and host a Q&A at the end. The focus for this webinar will be on weight control, but I am planning to do a second webinar later this year on water-only and Buchinger modified fasting for other conditions such as blood pressure, autoimmune disease, and cancer. All of the information will eventually be available for ...

How to Avoid BPA

The purported link between obesity and hormone-disrupting plastics chemicals like bisphenol A (BPA) was initially based in part on observations that the rise in chemical exposure seemed to coincide with the rise of the obesity epidemic, but that may only be a coincidence. Many other changes over the last half century, like an increase in fast-food consumption and watching TV, would seem to be simpler explanations. But why are our pets getting fatter, too? Fido isn’t drinking more fries or drinking more soda. Of course, the more we watch Seinfeld reruns, the less we may walk the dog, but what about our cats? They’re also getting fatter. Are we giving both them and our kids a few too many treats? That would seem to be an easier explanation than some pervasive obesity-causing chemical in the environment building up in the pet and person food chains. How then do we explain the results of a study of more than 20,000 animals from 24 populations, showing they are all getting fatter? Th...

The Diet We Were Designed to Eat

There are three broad theories about evolution and food. One is that humans have become adapted to grains and other products of the agricultural revolution over the last 10,000 years. Two is the paleo view “that 10,000 years is a blink of an evolutionary eye, and that humans are adapted to paleolithic diets with a lot of lean meat,” but why stop there? The third theory is that the last 200,000 years “is a minute of the evolutionary year” when we were mostly Stone Age humans and represents just the last 1 percent of the roughly 20 million years we’ve been evolving since our common great ape ancestor. So, What Is the “Natural” Human Diet? During our truly formative years, which one might say was the first 90 percent of our existence, our nutritional requirements reflected an ancestral past in which we ate mostly leaves, flowers, and fruits, with some bugs thrown in, thanks to wormy apples, to get our vitamin B12. “For this reason, another approach that might improve our understanding ...

Eating Before and After Exercise

Suing Your Personal Trainer

Q: Everybody these days is looking to file a lawsuit. What happens if a client is injured because a personal trainer screws up? A: Americans tend to be a litigious group: when somebody gets hurt, a lawsuit gets filed. Some personal trainers think a liability waiver protects them from being sued. Wrong. Anyone can be sued. A signed release only protects against certain claims, and some states heavily scrutinize releases or won’t enforce them at all as a matter of public policy. Other trainers think they don’t need liability insurance if they have a signed release. Wrong again. To avoid digging into your own pocket for legal defense or settlement costs, having insurance is essential. Working out assumes certain risks; e.g., you can tear a muscle, tendon or ligament. “Assumption of the risk” is a legal defense that can protect trainers from lawsuits resulting from those kinds of foreseeable injuries that are inherently involved in exercise. But it won’t protect a trainer who injures a ...

Squats Will Save You This Summer

The countdown is on and kids will be out of school before we know it, if not already. If you are a mom, like me, you know that the summertime can make you question how you are going to get in your workouts and stay devoted to your fitness. It’s a time when you need to be more flexible than ever, because schedules change daily and it can be hard to come up with a solid routine. Because of this, over five years ago, I created the best solution ever, my Summer Squat Challenge. It has proven to be such a huge success at not only keeping those booty goals in check but also keeping people focused on their goals in a fun and realistic way. I am all about keeping things realistic and fun and this was the perfect way to do just that. The challenge consists of 100 squats a day, every day of summer. The beautiful thing is you can split them up however you wish so there are no excuses and anyone can join, all levels and ages. My kids have actually been doing them with me each year. Started in my ...

What’s the Secret to Latino Longevity?

Latinos  living in the United States tend to have “less education, a higher poverty rate, and worse access to health care” and “represent the ultimate paradigm of healthcare disparities,” with the highest rate of uninsured, lowest rates of health screening and counseling, and poorest levels of blood pressure and blood sugar control, as well as “other measures of deficient quality of care.” So they must have dismal public health statistics, right? According to the latest national data, the life expectancy of white men and women is 76 and 81 years, respectively, and that of black men and women is shorter by a handful of years. And Latinos? Amazingly, they beat out everyone. Latinos live the longest. This has been called the Hispanic Paradox (now also known as the Latino Paradox), which I explore in my video, The Hispanic Paradox: Why Do Latinos Live Longer? . Latinos have a 24 percent lower risk of premature death and “lower risks of nine of the leading 15 causes of death,” with...

The Effects of the Hops Phytoestrogen in Beer on Breast Cancer Risk

Hops have been used for centuries as a flavoring agent in beer, but “[o]ver the years, a recurring suggestion has been that hops”—and therefore beer—may be estrogenic, thanks to a potent phytoestrogen in hops called 8-PN, also known as hopein. Might beer drinking affect our hormones? I discuss this in my video What Are the Effects of the Hops Phytoestrogen in Beer? . Even just the alcohol in beer can reduce testosterone levels in men, so when beer was tested as a source of estrogens, the alcohol was first removed. Researchers tested the equivalent of one can of beer every day for a month on the hormone levels of postmenopausal women, so as to not confound the results with her own estrogens, and they found significant alterations of hormonal levels during the beer month and then a return to baseline a week afterwards. But does this have any clinical effects, whether good or bad? A cross-sectional study of about 1,700 women found that beer drinkers appear to have better bone densit...
