Kidney Toxins Created by Meat Consumption

As I discuss in my video How to Treat Heart Failure and Kidney Failure with Diet , one way a diet rich in animal-sourced foods like meat, eggs, and cheese may contribute to heart disease, stroke, and death is through the production of an atherosclerosis-inducing substance called TMAO. With the help of certain gut bacteria, the choline and carnitine found concentrated in animal products can get converted into TMAO. But, wait a second. I thought atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries, was about the buildup of cholesterol. Is that not the case? “Cholesterol is still king,” but TMAO appears to accelerate the process. It seems that TMAO appears to increase the ability of inflammatory cells within the atherosclerotic plaque in the artery walls to bind to bad LDL cholesterol, “which makes the cells more prone to gobble up cholesterol.” So TMAO is just “another piece to the puzzle of how cholesterol causes heart disease.” What’s more, TMAO doesn’t just appear to worsen atheroscler...

Can Comfort Food Really Boost Your Mood?

Whether it’s a warm piece of sourdough bread, grandma’s flavorful beef stew, or a fresh-out-of-the-oven pastry, some foods just give you a warm and fuzzy feeling. These so-called comfort foods fill our stomachs  and  our souls — even if they’re not always the healthiest choices. There’s no denying that comfort food makes us feel good. But is there a scientific reason for that satisfaction, or is it all in our heads? And are there  healthier ways  to satisfy those comfort food cravings? Here’s what you need to know. What Is Comfort Food? Comfort food is any food that provides a sense of well-being, nostalgia, or comfort. Culture, upbringing, dietary habits, and past experiences can all shape what a person reaches for as comfort food. One person may gravitate towards sweets like ice cream, while another may crave something savory like pizza. “The idea of ‘comfort food’ really varies from person to person,” says Brigitte Zeitlin, M.P.H., R.D., and owner...

Can Soy Prevent and Treat Prostate Cancer?

As I discuss in my video The Role of Soy Foods in Prostate Cancer Prevention and Treatment , a compilation of 13 observational studies on soy food consumption and the risk of prostate cancer found that soy foods appear to be “protective.” What are observational studies? As opposed to interventional studies, in observational studies, researchers observe what people are eating but don’t intervene and try to change their diets. In these studies, they observed that men who ate more soy foods had lower rates of prostate cancer, but the problem with observational studies is that there could be confounding factors. For example, “people who choose to eat soy also make other lifestyle decisions that lower the risk of cancer (e.g., lower fat intake, higher vegetable and fruit intake, more frequent exercise),” maybe that is why they have less cancer. Most of the studies tried to control for these other lifestyle factors, but you can’t control for everything. What’s more, most of the studies we...

Healthy Cooking Ideas

The weekends are a great time to try a new recipe, or two. Typically, the weekends offer a little more downtime so take advantage of it and get creative. Find a recipe you wish to try and go for it! If the recipe isn’t completely healthy, there are ways you can modify any recipe to make it healthier and “Gina Approved”.  Just as important as choosing healthy foods is to your overall success, how you cook your foods and what you add to them is just as important. You can make a healthy food option unhealthy by how you prepare and cook it.Let’s take zucchini, for example. This is a completely healthy food choice, wouldn’t you say?  If it is simply raw, sautéed in a touch of healthy oil (coconut, olive, etc), grilled, baked, or broiled it is completely healthy. Now that same “healthy food” can become unhealthy when it battered and deep fried or lathered in butter and unhealthy cooking oils. What we add to foods and how we prepare them makes all the difference when it comes to co...

Breathing Squats

No matter where you look, you will see people talking about how squats are the king (or queen) of strength training exercises. I love squats as much as the next girl, and I find myself constantly experimenting with how I can make my workouts and the workouts for my clients as efficient as possible. Along with efficiency from a time standpoint, we like to focus on the big goals for most people— losing fa t and getting more defined and sculpted. One of the best ways to do this is to incorporate some higher repetition and heavier weight work. This is a dynamic combination for fat loss. It’s important to note that if you are looking to lose fat, you must get yourself strong in order to boost your metabolism —more muscle equals more calories burned at rest (a.k.a., a higher metabolic rate). Today, I wanted to share with you a technique you can use immediately with your squat sessions. This is an old bodybuilding style called the “Breathing Squat.” Typically, this is done with a Ba...

INSULOAD™ by Hi-Tech™

One of the greatest discoveries in the world of fitness over the past 10 years is the better understanding of carbs and how they relate to muscle growth. Carbs have become the evil stepmothers of the nutrition world, but for true massive muscle growth, carbs provide the link between ho-hum and wow. Not just any carb, but carbs utilized with highly functioning insulin, the most anabolic hormone our bodies naturally produce. Yes, insulin provides a much greater response to protein signaling and protein synthesis than testosterone, which allows incredibly fast muscle growth and density, but without the fat-inducing side effects seen in high-carb diets alone. Hi-Tech has developed yet another brilliant way to increase muscle mass, safely and quickly. INSULOAD is an “insulin mimetic” that helps reduce the breakdown of muscle by increasing the body’s utilization of carbs, and with it, the shuttling of glycogen and amino acids for supraphysical gains. In our body, insulin works in synergy...

Fermented or Unfermented Soy?

As you can see at the start of my video Fermented or Unfermented Soy Foods for Prostate Cancer Prevention? , there is an enormous variation in the rates of prostate cancer around the globe, with among the highest rates in the United States and lowest rates in Asia—though that may be changing. The largest increase in prostate cancer rates in the world in recent decades has been in South Korea, for example: a 13-fold increase in prostate cancer deaths nationwide. Researchers suggested the increase in animal foods may have played a role, since that was the biggest change in their diet over that period, with nearly an 850 percent increase. This is consistent with what we know in general about foods and the prevention and management of prostate cancer. Tomatoes, cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, and soy foods appear to decrease risk, there’s no clear benefit from fish, but there is an increased risk associated with meat and dairy, as you can see at 0:52 in my video . This may be bec...
