The Youth Suicide Rate Is on the Rise, and This 23-Year-Old Who Attempted to Take Her Own Life Has Some Thoughts About Why

On New Year’s Eve in 2017, Kaitlyn Buchko felt like everyone in the world was celebrating except for her. Most other 21-year-olds were out celebrating the first New Year's they could legally order drinks at a bar, but not Buchko. She was at home with her parents—and she wasn’t planning on making it to 2018.  Buchko, who is from South Carolina, was battling anxiety, bipolar disorder, and narcolepsy. She tried medication after medication, but she was still struggling. She had also just gotten out of an abusive relationship, and she wasn’t handling the breakup well. It felt like new layers kept getting added to her pain. So as people around the globe popped champagne and threw confetti, Buchko attempted to end her own life.  Buchko’s story isn’t uncommon. Earlier this month, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released a report that shows the suicide rate among people ages 10 to 24 rose 56% between 2007 and 2017, after remaining relatively steady fro...

Frankenstein Burger: Monster or Masterpiece?

Could it be true? A meatless burger that tastes like the real thing? For years, chefs, researchers and burger connoisseurs have pursued this dream, but a company called Impossible Foods based in Redwood City, California has made the impossible  probable. The New York Times and the New York Post reported on this marvel of the culinary world earlier this month. Intrigued by the concept, FitnessRx decided to investigate further. Here is what we discovered. The burger is entirely meatless. You got that right— zero meat whatsoever, but this is not a veggie burger, either. This burger was devised not in a kitchen, but in a lab! Impossible Foods’ CEO Pat O. Brown states on the company’s website, “… Our singular mission is to enable the world to continue to enjoy the foods they love and increasingly demand, without catastrophic damage to the environment. Our strategy was simple: invent a better way to transform plants into delicious, nutritious, safe and affordable meat, fish and dair...

Morning Sickness Can Be Beneficial

“Since the beginning of time, pregnant women have been reported to suffer from a syndrome variously known as morning sickness, pregnancy sickness, or nausea and vomiting during pregnancy.” The term “morning sickness” is actually misleading, as women can feel sick all day long. Sometimes, it can get so serious that women have to be hospitalized. Researchers at Harvard’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital found that saturated fat seemed to be a primary dietary risk factor for severe sickness, with five times the odds for every 15 grams intake of saturated fat, “equivalent to one quarter-pound cheeseburger.” The reason saturated fat intake may be such a strong risk factor could be through its effects on estrogen, as “[s]aturated fat has been shown to increase circulating levels of estrogen.” Why would we evolve to have such a negative reaction to saturated fat? Why would we evolve to get sick at all? As I discuss in my video Morning Sickness May Protect Mother and Child , “[p]regnancy sickn...

Pippa Middleton Says Cranial Osteopathy Helped Calm Her 1-Year-Old Son—But What Is It?

The Duchess of Cambridge’s younger sister, Pippa Middleton, has embraced an alternative therapy known as cranial osteopathy for her 1-year-old son. “Soon after Arthur was born last year, I heard a few mums talking about seeing a cranial osteopath,” the 36-year-old wrote in her Waitrose Weekend magazine column over the weekend, per People . “It’s a popular alternative therapy for newborns, particularly those who have had a traumatic birth, are unsettled, or have trouble sleeping,” she continued. “It claims to heal, relax and promote sleep, digestion and body alignment through gentle head and body manipulation." Pippa added that she started taking her son Arthur when he was just 7 months old. Pippa claims the results of the treatment were immediate. “I was fascinated to see how calming it was for him, but also how valuable the feedback was,” she wrote. “The osteopath noticed one side of his neck was tighter than the other, which explained why he favored one side sleeping. She al...

How to Increase Gut Bacterial Richness

We live in an “obesogenic environment,” with cheap junk food everywhere, thanks in part to subsidies going to the “‘food industrial complex,’ which manufactures obesogenic foods that foster addiction…The root causes…[may] make obesity difficult to escape,” but a lot of people do. If it were simply the external environment, why isn’t everyone obese? “Some individuals seem to be more susceptible to the obesogenic environment…than others,” which suggests a genetic component, supported by studies of twins and adopted kids, but the genes that have been identified so far account for only 6 to 11 percent of the genetic variation in body mass index between individuals. Perhaps variation in our “other genome”—that is, all the different microbes that inhabit our body, known as the microbiome—may be playing a role. We have a hundred times more bacterial genes inside us than human genes. As I discuss in my video Gut Microbiome: Strike It Rich with Whole Grains , a study found that people te...

Change Your Life for the Better

When you are making a decision involving  eating, fitness and exercise  or even your daily life, think about addition before you think about subtraction. I recently heard Natalie Jill, another trainer, discuss this concept and I thought it was awesome. As we make changes or try to develop new patterns in our life, we often focus on the negatives, or removing something. When you take something away, what generally happens? In my experience, I am left constantly thinking about the one thing I am trying to forget or remove. This is usually the case until I find a filler. That filler is the addition, or the positive, in your life that you need to offset the subtraction. Let’s break this down a bit more so you can see what I’m saying… 1. If you are trying to  change your eating patterns , think about what you can add in to be healthier.  Instead of focusing on removing sugar or processed carbs, think about adding in more of what you need. For example, adding in  ...

The Benefits of Sesame Seeds for Knee Osteoarthritis

Doctors have been injecting arthritis patients with gold since the 1920s. In fact, “[g]old-based medicines have been in use for thousands of years…and remarkably…are still in clinical use as DMARDs,” or disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs, meaning they can slow the progression of rheumatoid arthritis. Unfortunately, such drugs can be toxic and even fatal, causing conditions such as gold lung, a gold-induced lung disease. “Although its use can be limited by the incidence of serious toxicity,” injectable gold has been shown to be beneficial to patients with rheumatoid arthritis. But maybe, as some researchers have suspected , some of that benefit comes from the sesame oil that’s injected, which is used as the liquid carrier for the gold. As I discuss in my video Sesame Seeds for Knee Osteoarthritis , sesame seeds contain anti-inflammatory compounds with names such as sesamin and sesamol, which researchers suggest “may serve as a potential treatment for various inflammatory dis...

Clearly, she knows a thing or two about health and well-being, and she’s finally sharing some of her secrets. I noticed a big difference in going without solid food for 16 hours,” she said, per CNBC . RELATED: Is Celery Juice Healthy? Best Exercises for Stronger Hamstrings

By Nick Tumminello Women are more  quadriceps  dominant than men, and therefore tend to have weaker  hamstrings . And having weaker hamstrings makes females more prone to knee injury. So, by emphasizing the top seven hamstring exercises provided in this article, you won’t just  build sexier, better looking legs — you will also build a stronger, more well-balanced lower body that may be  less  prone to knee injury. Hamstring Weakness and Knee Injury Risk A 2007 study published in the  Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research  did a comparison of hamstring and  quadriceps femoris  muscle activity between men and women during a  single-leg squat , and found that men activate their hamstrings more effectively than women because women are quadriceps dominant. 1  This is crucial because females are two to eight times more likely to sustain an ACL tear than their male counterparts. 2,3  And, research investigating the po...

Sparkling or Still Water for Stomach Upset and Constipation?

“Natural bubbling or sparkling mineral waters have been popular for thousands of years,” but manufactured sparkling water was first “‘invented’ in the mid to late 1700s” when a clergyman suspended water over a vat of fermenting beer. “For centuries, carbonated water has been considered capable of relieving gastrointestinal symptoms, including dyspepsia,” or tummy aches. But we didn’t have good data until a study was published in 2002, which I discuss in my video Club Soda for Stomach Pain and Constipation . Twenty-one people with dyspepsia, which was defined in the study as “pain or discomfort located in the upper abdomen” including bloating, nausea, and constipation were randomized to drink one and a half quarts of either carbonated or tap water every day for two weeks. Carbonated water improved both dyspepsia and constipation compared to tap water. “Drink more water” is a common recommendation for constipation, but researchers didn’t observe a clear benefit of the added tap water....

Hyperhidrosis Is a Disorder That Makes Me Sweat Constantly—and I've Finally Learned to Live With It

Do you wear light-colored shirts without fear of getting sweaty pit stains? Do you shake hands with confidence because your palms are perfectly dry? If you answered yes to both of those questions, then consider yourself lucky. I envy you. That’s because I have hyperhidrosis, a condition that causes me to perspire a lot more than the average person. Hyperhidrosis is a fancy word for excessive sweating. It usually occurs under the armpits, the palms, the soles of the feet, the face, and a bunch of other body regions where people typically sweat. Doctors call it "focal" hyperhidrosis, because it affects one or more body areas—which differs from another form of hyperhidrosis that involves the entire body and is usually related to some underlying condition. RELATED: Chrissy Teigan Just Got Botox in Her Armpits to Stop Sweating—Here's How That Works What causes this sweat overload? Burpees to Increase Strength and Endurance

The Reebok Spartan Race series has adopted the burpee as their penalty exercise. In the process, the burpee has risen into fame as the unofficial exercise of all of obstacle course racing. Whether you love them, hate them or have learned to tolerate them, it is undeniable that if you want to do an obstacle course race, it’s a good idea to get acquainted with this exercise. WHAT IS A BURPEE? The burpee is a full body exercise, also referred to as a squat thrust, which combines strength training and aerobic exercise into one set of movements. The original exercise is broken up into four steps also known as the “four-count burpee.” This exercise begins in a standing position. Then, you drop into a squat position with your hands on the ground and either step or kick your legs out into a plank position. Then, you return to a squat position with either a jump or a step and return to starting standing position. This is the original burpee introduced in the 1930’s by American physiologist ...
